How fraction operations work
Fractions represent parts of a whole as numerator over denominator. Mixed numbers combine a whole part with a fractional part.
For addition and subtraction, fractions are converted to a common denominator so the numerators can be combined.
For multiplication and division, numerators and denominators are multiplied or inverted, then simplified using the greatest common divisor.
